Melanoma Monday

Since I was recently diagnosed with skin cancer I am very appreciative of  the new initiative – Melanoma Monday. Today, Monday May 7, is Melanoma Monday. Doing a little detective work can go a long way in finding skin cancer, the most common form of cancer diagnosed in the United States. However, a new survey found that many people do not know how to spot skin cancer and are unaware of their risk of developing the disease.

In an effort to increase the public’s understanding of skin cancer and motivate people to change their behavior to prevent and detect skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) today launched the new SPOT Skin Cancer™ public awareness initiative. The campaign’s simple tagline – “Prevent. Detect. Live.” – focuses on the positive actions people can take to protect themselves from skin cancer, including seeing a dermatologist when appropriate.

“Unlike other types of cancer that can’t be seen by the naked eye, skin cancer shows obvious signs on the surface of the skin that can be easily detected by properly examining it,” said board-certified dermatologist Daniel M. Siegel, MD, FAAD, president, American Academy of Dermatology. “The goal of SPOT Skin Cancer™ is to help save lives by educating the public on how to protect themselves from the sun and how to examine their skin for suspicious spots.”

SURVEY STATISTICS:
The need for a comprehensive skin cancer resource is evident based on the public’s general lack of understanding of detecting and preventing skin cancer. In fact, the Academy conducted an online survey of adults nationwide which showed:

  • Almost three-quarters of respondents (74 percent) did not know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S.
  • Only half (53 percent) of respondents knew how to examine their skin for signs of skin cancer.
  • Thirty percent of respondents were either unsure or did not know that skin cancer can be easily treated when caught early.

“When it comes to skin cancer, our survey demonstrates that knowledge is power,” said Dr. Siegel. “For example, respondents who know how to examine their skin for signs of skin cancer were more than twice as likely to have shown suspicious moles or spots to a medical professional as those who did not know how to spot the warning signs of skin cancer on their skin. In some instances, this knowledge can mean the difference between life and death, which is why it is so important to see a dermatologist if you notice a spot on your skin that is changing, itching or bleeding.”

SKIN CANCER FACTS:

  • More than 3.5 million skin cancer cases affecting 2 million people are diagnosed annually.
  • Current estimates are that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
  • The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent.

So, long and short of it people – DO your homework, go to your dermatologist annually and never second guess a mole.  I am forever thankful for my dermatologist catching what could have quickly been, a fatal mole.

It’s All About Me

This weekend I had the amazing opportunity to check off another thing from my bucket list. Curious what I crossed off this time? Well, this lassie can officially check of #54 from her list. Yeah!

This weekend I had the amazing opportunity to visit New York for my very own personal make over and photo shoot. And let me just say, it was as awesome as it sounds.  The wonderful people of PaloVia treated us like super stars. We had a scrumptious dinner at The House and had the pleasure of sitting next to Tim Tebow.  Did I mention he bought us drinks. Oh, he did and my boys are beyond jealous! Foxy bingo? Yep, it was in New York too.

I also had the opportunity to meet some amazing women from around the country. It was great to extend my circle of ‘In Real Life’ blogging friends and watch everyone transform from beautiful to drop dead gorgeous! I will add that it didn’t take much work for these women – they were beautiful on the inside and out!

Then it was a day of beautifying, hair and make-up. Here I am mid-process:

Curious what the end product looked like? Well, you are just going to have to tune in to see the final result.  They were quite stunning if I do say so myself. As soon as I have those fabulous pictures in my hand you will be the first to see. Well, actually the second – after me of course!

Next stop on my Bucket List Trail? Crossing out #9 in T-minus 17 days. Who wants to catch a wave with me??

Photo A Day – Part Duex

I have survived another nine days in the Photo A Day April challenge. Quite happy with myself except for one day that required a sunset and Mother Nature was in a foul mood. Almost two-thirds of the way done with this month. Maybe I just may complete a photo 365. Ahhh, who am I kidding. I am only in week three!

Photo A Day

I have tried to do a 365 photo challenge for years. Yes, you read that right… years. I, like many others I assume, start off really well and the BAM! Life takes over and I forget for a few days (or weeks) or don’t know what to take a picture of and then next thing you the whole process is down the drain. Well, I decided to take a different approach and do a photo a day challenge. With the Photo A Day you are given a prompt as to WHAT to take a picture of. Takes all the guess work out of it and makes you think creatively out of the box for that day.

Curious what I have been doing the first nine days pf the challenge?  Feast your eyes on these.

Relentless

The road stretches out before me. Its twists and turns often make for difficult passage but I embrace the uncertainty. For through challenge there is change and through change there is growth. I still have so much to learn.

I find myself seeking solace in words. Comforted by the freedom they bring. I crave to become lost within the ebb and flow of my pen strokes – needing to break free and speak what is true in my heart. Yet often my pen is met with strong resistance. Too afraid to put the words on the page for fear of making them real. For if they become real I am left to deal with the ramifications. I am left facing the stark reality of my soul.

It seems as though this is a constant battle. Forever searching, trying to find my way among the lost. My edges have become softly frayed and tattered from the journey. Oh how I long to live with reckless abandon – to no longer be purposefully bound to a society I neither want nor need. To be able to embrace beauty on my own terms. To love unconditionally and without apprehension. And even though my heart is fierce and loves without boundaries, it remains guarded, afraid of what lurks in the shadows.

This is how I imagine it is to live with a relentless heart. To live with such intensity that your inner fire has no choice but to burn – reaching every corner of your being, filling you with life and feeding your soul.

This piece is a product of my Bigger Picture Blogs Writing Circle. Our prompt for this assignment was “relentless“. Come on and join us!

A Wrinkle In Time

Sigh…. wrinkles. We all have them. Ok, maybe not all of us, but this lassie does! I like to consider them laugh lines, love lines, heck even happy lines. But in all truth – I wish they would go away. I am the first to admit that I love to soften the look of my crows feet and forehead lines when editing pictures. That simple act of camouflage makes me looks years younger. I have jars of various creams, lotions and gels that promise to erase the signs of aging. While some may work a little or for a short time, I have not had any luck finding my youthful eyes of the past.

Biting the Dust Irish Style

This past Saturday I put another line through one of the items on my Bucket List. Number 4 to be exact. Yes, this weekend I was in a parade. Of course, if this lassie is going to be in a parade, it had better be a St. Patrick’s Day parade!

I could not have asked for a more beautiful day to complete one of my Bucket List items.  The skies were blue and the weather was amazing. Ok, it was actually really hot. March in Chicago – who knew?! But I did get to ride atop a float and throw candy to the spectators which was shockingly really fun.

So now that I have officially checked that item off my list I am looking forward to my next adventure. Did I mention that adventure is less than two months away?? Squeee! Can. Not. Wait. Sun + surf + sand = Bucket List Item #9!

Road Trip To Bliss

It’s that time of year again. The time when bloggers get giddy with delight, blow up Twitter with squees of excitement and converge in Nashville for four days of ultimate bliss. yes, that’s right…. it’s time for BLISSDOM!!

This year, instead of flying, I will be road tripping in a sassy Chevy Traverse courtesy of GM. Thanks GM!! Va-Room! Nothing like heading to Nash Vegas in style. Don’t worry, this lassie won’t be traveling in luxury alone. This Traverse is going to be full of fabulous writers, photographers, wives, mothers and bringers of awesome. Bet you didn’t know the Traverse could handle that much fabulousness did you?

Want to meet the players? Of course you do!

Player One: Kat

It’s moi! A funky and sassy girl with a lot of spunk. I am a lover of words, creator of stories and have a crazy passion for photography. I live in the land of boys and cherish any time I can spend with my own species. I must have coffee and music on my road trips or I get crabby. I am directionally challenged but can parallel park on a dime. I sing off key and dance like nobodies business – bring on the Cupid Shuffle! Oh, and I snort when I laugh but only when I laugh really hard. Believe me, it’s endearing.

 Player Two: Sarah

Sarah is the Princess of Everything – in her own mind, anyway. She’s also a cookie baking extraordinaire (don’t believe it? Ask anyone whose tried one of her famous – YES, FAMOUS – cookies!). She’s a bit clumsy and she’s a tremendous goofball, but she’ll make a great co-pilot on the Road To Bliss. Why? Because she’s got a fantastic sense of direction, she ALWAYS knows where the nearest coffee places are, and she’s brewing up a fantastic road trip playlist. Just, uh… don’t ask her to parallel park.

Player Three: Michelle

Michelle may have bribed her way into this road trip by promising to bake and bring something blissful.  Or maybe she’s just that fun.  She must really want to head to Blissdom since she’s avoids road trips whenever possible.  Driving in a Chevy Traverse though?  That may be the deciding factor.  She’ll be a great co-pilot for the simple reason that she promises not to ask “are we there yet” a single time.  Oh, and she has the bladder of a camel, which means fewer stops along the way!

Now the true question on everyone’s mind is – will we be able to fit all our stuff in the Traverse too? We will keep you posted! Feel free to stalk Kat, Sarah and Michelle on Twitter! Meanwhile, we’ll be getting our glitter ready for the conference (and road trip) of the year!

Lost

Traveling down the dark and unfamiliar road. The moon provides intermittent patches of light between the ominous billowing clouds. My head is spinning and my feet can’t find the ground. Dredging memories from my youth, trying to feverishly re-knit the past. Trying to find meaning amidst the clouds of uncertainty.

Your mind knows where to exit yet it refuses to go – not ready. Wishing there was a different route, a different choice. But alas, it is not your choice, not your decision to make. The decision rest in His hands. Even though you argue and disagree, it is His will.

So I sit, knowing that someday the tables will spin and it will be me at the head of the table. I will have to sift through the fog that slowly rolls in, filling all my void with uncertainty. I will be left, searching for the ever true light…..And I know, you will be there, right next to me.

I Just Wanna Run

I just wanna run, sassy irish lassieI have a secret. Something that, if you knew me now you would never believe. Before I had kids, I hated running. Kind of ironic since I play soccer, but running just to run – not finding the love. I would play double header games, join any pick up game I could find and run with a ball forever, but something about just me, my thoughts and the open road was not inviting to me. Till one day, I made myself do it. Now, I can’t go a day without it.
